The Bleeding Edge Explained

Explaining the impact of emerging technologies

BOFH

I cut my IT teeth on BOFH (Bastard Operator From Hell).  The first one is saved here.  It was a bit raw but that’s what you got at the end of the previous millennium.  After nearly 30 years, I wasn’t expecting to see much but, while reading up on the latest AR/VR hijinks, I found it again.

The most recent column discusses the impact of wind shear on cloud computing and warns about rust stains from using cheap, imported blockchain.  With the exception of the hefty helping of sarcasm, and the power-axe wielding robot, there is a lot of value in the piece.  After all, the central thesis is “we want to implement technology that will work and not fail inside a short period.”

That’s the sort of advice that companies should be paying for – find what is useful and what will work, then decide if the cost is less than the benefit, and only then should they decide whether or not to embark on a project.  Oh, and keep a closer eye on the project with proper management.  After all, you don’t really want to be facing a power-axe.
